How caravan finance works

Most caravan loans are secured against the van itself. That usually means a lower interest rate than an unsecured personal loan, because the lender has the caravan as security. You borrow the purchase price, repay it over a fixed term, and the caravan is yours outright once the loan is paid off. Some loans also allow a balloon — a lump-sum final payment that lowers your regular repayments — which suits some buyers but needs a plan for how you'll cover it at the end.

Secured or unsecured?

A secured loan generally offers lower rates and higher borrowing amounts, but the lender will usually require comprehensive insurance on the van and may place conditions on its age. An unsecured personal loan is simpler and has no asset requirement, but rates are usually higher and loan sizes smaller. Which is better depends on the price and age of the van and your situation — we'll show you both where it makes sense.

Buying privately

Private sales are common with caravans. Lenders will normally run a PPSR (Personal Property Securities Register) check to confirm there's no money owing on the van, and may ask for a valuation or inspection before settlement. Talk to us before you pay a deposit so we can check what the lender will need.

FAQ

Common questions

How old can a caravan be to get finance? ⌄

It varies by lender. Many will consider vans up to around 10–15 years old at the end of the loan, and some panel lenders can look at older ones. Tell us the make, model and year and we'll check which lenders will fit.

Can I get caravan finance for a private sale? ⌄

Yes. Private sale finance works much like dealer finance, although the lender will usually want to run a PPSR check and may ask for extra details about the van before settlement.

Do I need a deposit for caravan finance? ⌄

Not always. Some lenders will finance the full purchase price, though a deposit can improve your options and reduce your repayments. We'll explain what's possible for your situation.

Can I finance a motorhome or camper trailer too? ⌄

Yes — motorhomes, camper trailers and other recreational vehicles can be financed. The lender and terms depend on the asset and its age.

Will checking my options affect my credit score? ⌄

No. Using our calculator doesn't touch your credit file, and we'll explain what the lender needs before any formal application.
